'It's like putting plasters on gunshot wounds'- True extent of housing crisis revealed

No end in sight for the housing crisis as shock calculations show true face of the saga.

DUBLIN’S HOUSING CRISIS is so dire that if the social housing list was stopped today, it would take 22 years and six months to fill the demand.

Calculations by Dublin City Councillor Daithi De Roiste indicate it would be the year 2039 before everyone in Dublin was in a home and that’s only if the list was stopped right now.

New figures seen by TheJournal.ie highlight that, on average, between 270 and 290 families are being added to the list every month.

Right now, there are 29,756 applications on the list.

This is up from the last quarter where it stood at 28,925.

In the first six months of the year, there were just 659 allocations, meaning that, at the current rate, it would take 22.58 years to fill the demand.

De Roiste said the issue here is the lack of a big vision.

He told TheJournal.ie:

“We are in a crisis. We all know that. But there is no grand vision for sorting out the mess.

“It’s good, of course, to see the Minister announcing houses here and there but that’s just a drop in the ocean.

It’s like putting plasters on gunshot wounds.

“But every number here is a real person and that’s the frightening thing.”

Although, there are a number of developments being constructed at the moment, De Roiste believes the Government needs to look to large swathes of land in the hope of creating new large towns.

He added: “We need to look at land out in west Dublin. I know it will cost money to develop these sites.

“But right now that’s what needs to happen.

“Hundreds of families are being added to this list every month. It’s time for a new grand scale development with proper infrastructure and a proper vision.”
